Birmingham, Alabama was founded in 1871 after the Civil War and is known for the commitment and sacrifice of its community volunteers.  The United Way of Central Alabama’s Alexis de Tocqueville Society is the 11th largest in America.  Civitan International was founded in Birmingham in 1920 and maintain their headquarters here.

Birmingham carries the nickname the “Magic City” because of the abundance of  the three ingredients to make iron and steel-coal, iron ore and limestone.  Birmingham is listed among the 150 most affordable cities, is a major banking center and home to 3 of the top 50 banks in the United States.  Birmingham was also ranked #15 in the Expansion Management magazine in January 2005, as one of “America’s 50 Hottest Cities”.
